Dynamo's Rhythm Aces

With covers and tribute acts ten-a-penny on the live circuit, it’s going to take something a leeetle bit special to raise the genre above a quick session of milking the nostalgia cash cow. Step forward Dynamo’s Rhythm Aces, whose particular brand of deja vu-doo spin is not only refreshing, but hands over its visa papers at the boarders of genius. Simply put the trio, Daniel (guitar/piano) Big Bill (double bass/vox) and Pete (drums) take the music, verve and vigour of 1940’s/1950’s swing, r&b and hillbilly music, but only play contemporary songs. Hence swinging versions of the likes of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Relax’, scat-style takes on The Smiths’ ‘Panic’ and a fingerpickingly good version of Motorhead’s ‘The Ace of Spades. What’s more the band don’t take the piss (much), playing the songs with a genuine pop obsessive affection. “I’d say that, of all the covers we play, we own 98% of the original records which were bought from a fan point of view. We have a lot of fun doing it because we love pop music as much as we like the 40’s swing and 50’s rockabilly,” declares Big Bill. “You’d be surprised how many of those songs, when you strip everything away, are just three-chord r&b songs. The thing that appeals about the music then is the same thing as now - simplicity. There’s no great mystery to it.” Live the band go like the clappers and have built themselves something of a formidable reputation, enough to get them booked for this years WOMAD. “People don’t immediately get what we’re doing when they see us live. “I like watching their faces when it suddenly clicks that they’re listening to ‘Kiss’ or ‘Panic’ done in a 40’s swing style and it still sounds as good,” enthuses Daniel. “We actually started out doing 40’s and 50’s tunes, but when you start to play The Beastie Boys in that style and it’s still really rocking, well.......you can’t really turn back can you?”
